Compulsory replacement of tachographs for deliveries with a maximum weight of over 2.5 tons
International transport:
From 1 July 2026, vans over 2.5 tonnes (including trailer/semi-trailer) used for commercial international transport (including cabotage) must have a 2nd generation smart tachograph, extending the obligation to vehicles in the 2.5t to 3.5t class, which were previously only subject to national rules, and must record every kilometre, time and driver activity to ensure safety and fair competition.
With trailer:
If a motor vehicle up to 3.5 tons is used with a trailer so that the total weight exceeds 3.5 tons, it is mandatory to install a tachograph on this type of vehicle as well.
Who falls under this obligation?
Professional carriers:
The obligation applies to entrepreneurs and carriers who transport goods for payment as part of their business.
Courier services:
Couriers providing delivery services outside of Slovakia also become part of the obligation to install a tachograph.
What is important to know?
New generation tachograph:
Vehicles subject to this obligation will have to be equipped with so-called smart tachograph of the second generation (Smart Tacho 2), which enables remote control.
National exceptions:
Exemptions continue to apply for domestic journeys, but it is essential to check whether your vehicle is subject to the obligation for international transport.
Data Tracking:
The tachograph records distance traveled, speed, driving time, as well as start and end points, and position every 3 hours.
